HERE'S WHY THESE AREN'T SAFE AND WHY WE DO NOT SELL LAUNDRY PODS OR STRIPS

While they may boast "eco-friendly" plastic-free packaging, these products contain POLYVINYL ALCOHOL (PVA) – a plastic (this is a chemical definition) that goes straight into our water. If the goal of plastic-free packaging is to reduce the amount of plastics that enter our environment (air, water, land, other animals) and are eventually ingested by us, we do not see the environmental or health benefit of using a product that introduces plastics directly into the water stream. Some advocates of strips and pods claim that PVA is "biodegradable," however many factors effect biodegradability and evidence that PVA can easily biodegrade in US waste water treatment facilities is lacking. And what does biodegradable plastic mean anyway? Tinier peices of a toxic substance? It is water soluble, which doesn't mean that the synthetic material (plastic) actually degrades in any way. Someone with a nut allergy, for example, would not drink nuts dissolved in water, the allergen is still present. Furthermore, relatively small amounts of PVA have been found to be toxic to aquatic life, which makes us question its safety to humans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyvinyl_alcohol).

There is a lot of contention about polyvinyl alcohol, it's toxicity, definition, and environmental and health consequences. However, we believe that in matters of health, it is always better to proceed with caution. Until there is more conclusive evidence, we will not be selling pods or sheets – especially when products exist with proven safe ingredients and are available with zero packaging, like Meliora or Sustainable Haus Laundry Detergent Powders (washing soda, baking soda, saponified coconut oil, optional essential oil) or Sustainable Haus Dishwashing Pods (baking soda, citric acid, castile soap)

by the way – pods and sheets, on average, are twice as expensive per load compared to typical liquid laundry detergent and up to 5 times more expensive when compared to powdered laundry detergent.
